WEDWay Radio Season 8: Episode 1 - Hyperion

The wait is over.  Today we are proud to announce the release of Episode 1 of Season 8 of WEDWay Radio.  This season we are taking a different approach.  Instead of a swhole season of independent shows we are creating an 8 episode season dedicated to one subject.

This is episode 1 - Hyperion.  On this particular episode we take a look at the growth and success of the Hyperion Studio in Los Feliz, CA.  At this partoiculat studio, Disney created Mickey Mouse, The Silly Symphony shorts and created Snow White.

Many firsts came at the Hyperion studio, including

  • The first sound cartoon
  • The first color short
  • The first full length animated studio

The studio grew from a small 1,600 square foot building that employed under 15 people to a thriving, almost bursting studio with over a thousand employees.

The studio served Disney until 1940 when Disney moved to Burbank.

Special thanks on this episode to:

  • David McBride of Radio Harambe
  • Paula Sigman Lowery, who is a consultant to the Walt Disney Museum and the Walt Disney Archives
  • Quinn Mosier who provided many of the musical interludes you'll hear this season

Hi Guys! So glad you are back with Season 8.

In June I had the opportunity to go visit Walt's old homes and studios in L.A., including his Uncle Robert's home. The home was somewhat in disrepair. Shortly after our visit there was an article in an LA paper that the house was to be torn down. There has been a petition started to have it added to the National Register of Historic Sites and prevent it's demolition. The petition can be found at:

We went by both residences on Kingswell, as well as Lyric and Woking Way. We also went to the supermarket which is the site of the first studio. They have a plaque with a photo of the studio, however they were going through some remodeling and had taken it down to prevent damage. We also went by the Barn and got to ride the carousel at Griffith Park, topped off with lunch with Margaret Kerry at the Tam O'Shanter.

Wow! Sounds like a great tour! I am familiar with the Disney house and the rush to get it on the register before it is demolished. Thats too bad, but as far as historic Disney places go, it pretty minor. Glad you enjoyed the show.

Thanks guys. You two have the best Disney history pod cast out there. Season 8 Episode 1 knocked it out of the park - again...
