Walt in Old Hollywood

By: Nate

Documentary films about old Hollywood are usually pretty stiff.  They were made to showcase a particular studio or production, but sometimes recycle publicity reels and other times are not even accuate when talking about the scenes they are describing.  Despite all of this I am a huge fan of these publicity reels and if you listen tot he podcast it probably won't surprise you that I am a fan of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Tonight when I noticed a film I hadn't seen before about Old Hollywood I decided to tune in and expectd to see some of the same footage that is usually thrown together in a narrated montage style documentary.  One thing these old documentaries is that Disney is rarely mentioned or seen in any of these Old Hollywood doc's.  One reason is that most of these were created by the sudios themselves and they didn't really feature the works of others.  Another is that Disney is more relevant today and as well know they arent willing to showcase their old properties, even if it means taking Vault Disney off the air at 2 AM to show reruns of Thats So Raven.

But.......I was surprised tonight to see Fred MacMurray, Walt, The Disney Studio and even a few elephants from The Jungle Cruise in this film.  Ken Murray, an entertainer, pitchman and MC during Hollywoods Golden Age released a film that encapsulated years film that he himself shot, and released it under the title Hollywood Without Makeup.  If you are a fan of Old Hollywood you will like this film.

Here is a section of with Walt.  Its amazing to see him playing with Ken Murray's daughters and driving them around the backlot pretending to lock them up  the Zorro stage and showing off the mechanical elephant.

Move ahead to the 9:15 mark to see the Disney stuff.  It starts with Fred MacMurray.

Dancing the Dance

By: Nate Parrish

Can you imagine going ten rounds with Rocky?  Or pitching to Roy Hobbs?  Or cracking a whip in a duel with the Nazi's like Indiana Jones?

You can imagine right? And thats exactly what the Jedi Taining Academy at Disneyland at the Disney Hollywood Studio does, provides younglings the opportunity to sqaure off against a Sith Lord.  But what about the rest of us.  There were no lightsaber weilding training opportunities in the 1980's.  If you are over the age of twelve theree arent many opportnities to take on a real swashbuckler.  Sure, Captain Jack Sparrow makes appearances at the Disney Parks, but he doesnt invite to grab a sword and take him on.  But.....what if you could?

On Episode 95 of WEDWay Radio we discussed Zorro Days, where the actual actors from the film, not entertainers for Disneyland but the actors from the show would be at Disneyland to celebrate Zorro.

  • There was a parade down main street where the actors were featured.
  • There was a swordfight duel with Zorro and his nemisis Monastario
  • And, there were Meet and Greets where guests were invited to actually swordfight with Zorro.  Grown men and young children were invited to come on stage and go toe to toe with Zorro

So, it can happen.

100 Years of Color & Style

By: Nate Parrish

100 years ago today, Mary Robinson was born in McAlester Oklahoma.  After attending college in San Jose, she attended Chouinard Art Institute where she would meet and then later marry artist Lee Blair.  Oddly enough, although she is a Disney Legend and known predominantly for her work at Disney, she started her career at the Ub Iwerks, while Lee would start at the Harmon-Ising Studio; both studios ran by a former partner or employees of Walt Disney.  By 1940 both were working off and on at the Disney Studio and although she worked on projects such as Dumbo and an early version of Lady and the Tramp, she would create a style that Disney fans would on a trip to South America with a select group of Disney Artists in 1941.

While most probably know that Mary Blair created the iconic styling of the characters within Its A Small World, theres still a lot more to her work than this single attraction.  Heres a brief sampling of her magnificient work:

This piece came from the Good Neighbor Trip to South America, but would serve as the inspirtaion for Its A Small World.

I love this trian.  So creative and innovative

The Letter to Ubbe

By: Nate Parrish

I spoke with Dave Smith last year and asked him what was the most valueable item in the Disney archives; and while I didn't get a definitive answer he noted that they had several items personal to Walt that many collectors would love to have.  How do you get these items? Well, here is a letter that is one such item. It sold at auction in May of 2011 for $211,000.00 before fees (almost $250K afterwards).

What makes this particular letter from Walt Disney so important?  It was written in June of 1924, just ten months after Walt had arrived in Los Angeles from Kansas City.  The letter was sent to Ubbe Iwwerks (soon to be Ub Iwerks) who was still living in Kansas City and working at the Film Ad at the time.  Walt is asking Ubbe to come out to Los Angeles.  The return address is the Disney Brothers Studio on Kingswell Avenue, the first real address for a Walt and Roy Disney Studio, known as the Disney Brothers Studio.

One thing that is really evident after reading it a couple of times is the persuasive nature of Walt over Ubbe.  Walt uses phrases like "glad you made up your mind to come out.....don't change your mind..." He then tries to hook Ubbe by allowing him to use Virginia Davis' fathers Cadillac to come out to California.  And then, as one last statement he states he wouldn't live in Kansas City if he could have the place, basically saying that Kansas City held no future for Walt.

Here is a transcript of the entire letter:

June 1st 1924

Dear friend Ubbe:

I’ll say I was surprised to hear from you and also glad to hear from you. Everything is going fine with us and am glad you have made up your mind to come out. Boy you will never regret it — this is the place for you — a real country — to work and play in — no kidding — don’t change your mind — remember what Old Horace Greeley said "Go west young man — go west!" —

We have just finished our sixth comedy for M. J. Winkler and are starting to-morrow on the seventh of the first series of 12. Miss Winkler is well pleased with them and has given us some high praise — she is leaving New York for here June 1st, and I believe we will be able to start a twice a month schedule instead of our monthly schedule —

I can give you a job — as artist-cartoonist and etc. with the Disney Productions, most of the work would be cartooning — answer at once and let me know what you want to start and I will write more details — At the present time I have one fellow helping me on the animating, & three girls that do the inking etc. while Roy handles the business end — I have a regular cast of kids that I use in the pictures and little Virginia is the star —

I was talking with Mr. Davis last nite — told him you was figuring on coming out and he wants you to drive his car out — it is a seven passenger cadilac — he will pay all expenses on the car — such as gas, oil and up keep — I think it is a dandy proposition, and the best way to come out — you could have a nice trip —

Mr Davis says it is a good car — an old model but has not been driven very far — he wants you to go over to the Muchmore Garage 3220 (under Georgia Browns Dramatic School) and take a look at it, just tell them you are figuring on driving it out for him — then write and let me know what you want to do, and how soon you can come out – if you can leave before the first of the month all the better — of course you would sell all of your furniture and also your car? Wouldn’t you? — I believe it would be best if you did — Any ways write and let me know all the details — give my regards to every one at the Film Ad and the boys at the Arabian Knights — and also to your mother — As ever your old friend.

Walt —

Don’t hesitate — Do it now — !

— P. D. Q. —

P.S. I wouldn’t live in K.C. now if you gave me the place — yep — you bet — Hooray for Hollywood — !!
